Nonprofit Website Design

Your website is the digital hub where donors, volunteers, families and grant reviewers all show up looking for something different. Our nonprofit website design makes sure each of them finds it fast. That might be a donate button, a program sign-up, a resource in their own language, or proof that your work is making a difference.

WHY NONPROFIT SITES ARE DIFFERENT

One website, four audiences

Most business websites have one job. A nonprofit's website has at least four. A site that tries to serve everyone on the homepage at once usually serves no one.

Donors

Need to trust you and give in a few taps.

Volunteers

Need to see what's available and sign up.

The people you serve

Need to find your community programs and know how to get help.

Board members and grant reviewers

Need proof of impact and a clear picture of your organization's work.

Good nonprofit web design gives each group its own clear path, starting from the first screen.

OUR WORK

Nonprofit websites we've built

We'd rather show you than tell you. Here are three nonprofit clients whose sites we designed and built.

YWCA Contra Costa / Sacramento website built by EnlightWorks

YWCA Contra Costa / Sacramento

The YWCA serves women and families across two counties with childcare, mental health services and housing. We organized the new site around the organization's services.

CSNK2A1 Foundation website built by EnlightWorks

CSNK2A1 Foundation

The CSNK2A1 Foundation supports families living with Okur-Chung Neurodevelopmental Syndrome (OCNDS), a rare genetic condition. For a nonprofit devoted to a rare disease, the audience ranges from parents who just got a diagnosis to clinicians and researchers. The site gives each of them a separate path.

Donations, a shop and the foundation's social media feeds sit alongside those resources. That way, families who come for answers can also find ways to help.

FundaMental Change website built by EnlightWorks

FundaMental Change

FundaMental Change is a mental health awareness nonprofit and resource hub. We built a site centered on its resources, events and articles, with content in both English and Spanish so more of the community can use it.

WHAT GOES INTO OUR NONPROFIT WEB DESIGN

The essential elements we build in

Every nonprofit site is different, but a well designed website shares a few essential elements. Here's what we build in.

Your story, told through real people

People give to people, not to mission statements. We build your organization's story around the individuals and families your work has changed. That means impact stories, testimonials, and high quality images of your actual programs instead of stock photos. Real photos and short video stories feel more authentic than polished perfection, and they help supporters picture what their gift does.

A donation page that's easy to finish

A clunky donation form loses gifts. We keep forms to the fields you truly need, set up seamless functionality between your site and your donation platform, and offer suggested amounts tied to real outcomes. Monthly donations and recurring donations are simple to set up. Wherever your platform allows it, we embed the donation form on your own website, so supporters don't get bounced to a third-party page halfway through.

Navigation people don't have to think about

The goal is a seamless user experience. Visitors should understand your organization's mission and find what they came for without hunting. We plan the site structure before we design anything, so your key pages (programs, ways to give, volunteer, events, about) are easy to reach from every page.

Call to action buttons that stand out

Your most important action, usually Donate, gets one consistent, easy-to-spot button on every page. Secondary actions like Volunteer, Register or Sign Up for Updates show up where they make sense. Visitors always have a next step, and the page doesn't feel cluttered.

Built for phones first

A large share of nonprofit website visitors arrive on a phone, often from a social media post or an email appeal. So we design for small screens first:

  • Buttons big enough to tap
  • Forms that are easy to fill out with a thumb
  • Pages that load quickly on a cellular connection

Accessibility planned in from day one

Web accessibility isn't something you bolt on later. Following the WCAG guidelines, we design with:

  • Readable color contrast, at least 4.5:1 for body text
  • Descriptive image text
  • Clear headings
  • Keyboard-friendly navigation
  • Accessible forms

After launch, we monitor for issues as your content changes.

Consistent branding and visual design

Your colors, fonts, photos and voice should feel the same on every page, and match what supporters see on your other platforms. Consistent branding builds recognition and trust. Whether your visual style is bold branding or something quieter, the site design should feel like you.

Events, registration and community engagement

Many nonprofits run on events, classes and programs. We build event pages and calendars, and connect event registration and ticket sales to the digital tools you already use. We can build a landing page for specific projects or campaigns, and add volunteer sign-up forms so form submissions go straight to the right person on your team.

Transparency that builds trust

Major donors and grant reviewers want to see accountability. We give your annual reports, financials and 501(c)(3) information a clear home on the site, so the people deciding whether to fund you can find them quickly.

Search engine optimization built into the design

A strong website that nobody finds won't spread awareness or bring in new supporters. That's why we build search engine optimization into the site design from the start, not after launch.

It starts with keyword research, to learn how people actually search for the services your organization offers. We also set up Google Analytics to track donations, registrations and other form submissions, so you can see how your website is performing in real numbers.

Clear, well-organized pages also help ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews understand your organization and recommend it.

HOW WE WORK

Our nonprofit website design process

1. Discovery

We want a deep understanding of your mission. We learn your audiences and your goals: more donations, more registrations, more volunteers, or all three. We also look at what's working and what isn't on your current site.

2. Structure and content

We map out every page and plan the website's content, including which stories, programs and calls to action go where. If you need help with content creation, our team writes it.

3. Design

This is where our creative design work happens. You see the visual design before anything gets built, and we refine it with your feedback.

4. Web development

We build the new site on a fast, secure content management system. It includes the interactive features you need, like donation forms, event calendars and social media integration.

5. Launch

We test every page and form on phones and desktops, and set up tracking. We also handle the move from your old site, including redirects so you don't lose search traffic.

6. Ongoing support

After launch, we stay on as your web team.

ALREADY HAVE A SITE?

A nonprofit website redesign might be enough

Not every nonprofit needs to start from scratch. If your content is solid but the site is hard to use, slow or out of date, a website redesign can fix that while keeping what's working. It can modernize the look, clean up navigation and improve the donation experience. We'll tell you honestly which path makes sense after we look at your current site.

AFTER LAUNCH

Ongoing maintenance and support

Your website should keep up with your organization. With our managed website care, your team sends requests through our help desk and we handle the updates, from posting a new event to closing a waitlist on a program page. Your client portal shows what's done and what's next.

We also handle hosting, security, ongoing maintenance and monthly SEO health checks, so your staff can stay focused on the mission. If your team would rather make some updates themselves, we'll show you how. Many common changes take just a few clicks.

Website builder or web designer?

A DIY website builder can work for a brand-new non profit with a very small budget. As programs grow, most organizations hit the same limits we hear about from other nonprofits:

  • The site doesn't tell the story well.
  • Giving is clunky.
  • Nobody has time to keep it updated.
  • It doesn't show up in search.

Dynamic websites grow with your programs. Static brochures don't. That's usually the point where it makes sense to bring in an experienced team, a full service digital agency that understands nonprofits.

What makes a good nonprofit website?

A good nonprofit website tells a clear story about your impact, makes donating and volunteering easy, works well on phones, is accessible to everyone, and is easy to find in search. The top nonprofit websites also give each audience (donors, volunteers, the people you serve) its own clear path.
